12: Natural Finishes vs Synthetic Sealants: A Return to Honest Surface Design
In high-end design, surface finish isn’t just an aesthetic detail. It’s a design choice that reveals your values. At Hard Brassware (HBW), we favour natural finishes over synthetic sealants because they respect the material, improve sustainability, and allow each piece to age with dignity.
Brass doesn’t need to be frozen in time. It needs to breathe, respond, and tell a story.
What’s Wrong With Synthetic Coatings?
Lacquers, powder coatings, and synthetic sealants are often applied to “lock in” a polished look and prevent oxidation. While they may preserve a certain aesthetic temporarily, they often come with trade-offs:
