13: Material Stories: A Global History of Brass Craftsmanship

Brass may feel familiar today, but its history is anything but ordinary. Across continents and centuries, it has been used to make instruments of beauty, ritual, and everyday life - always evolving with the cultures that shaped it.

At Hard Brassware (HBW), we see brass as more than a material. Every handle, knob, and fixture we make is part of a much longer story - one forged by hands across history.

Ancient Origins

Brass - a copper and zinc alloy - first appeared over 2,000 years ago. Early examples emerged in the Middle East and South Asia, where copper-smelters worked with naturally zinc-rich ores to form the earliest versions of brass. These were not laboratory formulas but the result of local experimentation and material intuition.

By the Roman era, brass was widely used in coins, military equipment, jewelry, and architecture. Its resemblance to gold made it popular, but its durability and accessibility made it essential. It was a material for everyone - prized for its strength and warmth of colour.

Cultural Expressions in Craft

Brass has never looked the same in any two places. Instead, it reflects the aesthetics, values, and technologies of the cultures that use it.
  • India – Under the Mughal Empire, artisans created engraved mirrors, prayer bowls, and ceremonial objects from brass, often ornamented with floral motifs or calligraphy.

  • North Africa – In Morocco and Egypt, pierced brass lanterns and inlaid metal furniture became cornerstones of both domestic life and religious architecture.

  • Europe – From Renaissance locks to Baroque candelabras, brass played a role in both mechanical innovation and ornamental detail across France, Italy, and Germany.

  • West Africa – The Kingdom of Benin (modern-day Nigeria) became globally renowned for its cast brass reliefs and sculptures, made by guilds using the lost-wax technique. These pieces documented royalty, ritual, and historical events - many of which survive in museums today.

From Tool to Treasure

Brass sits uniquely between utility and art. It’s strong and corrosion-resistant but soft enough to be engraved, hammered, and cast. Over centuries, these qualities made it the metal of choice for:
  • Musical instruments
  • Scientific tools and compasses
  • Religious and ceremonial artifacts
  • Decorative trims and hardware
  • Everyday domestic objects

Its golden hue gave it visual appeal. Its workability gave it expressive potential. And its durability gave it staying power across time.

Designing With Legacy in Mind

At HBW, we don’t treat brass as a blank canvas. We see it as a material with memory.

Our designs are informed by a long lineage of craft. We draw from the geometry of Islamic calligraphy, the bold curves of Art Nouveau door plates, the elegance of Victorian latches, and the warmth of traditional Japanese joinery. Each influence is reinterpreted through a modern lens - updated, not imitated.

We also maintain a link to traditional methods through our production partnerships in Jakarta, where small-scale foundries still use techniques passed down through generations.

What you get is hardware that feels rooted - not trendy. Honest, not overdesigned. Contemporary, but respectful of where it came from.

Final Thoughts

Brass is more than a material. It’s a cultural language that has been spoken across time and space - shaped by different hands, tools, and beliefs. When you choose HBW, you're not just selecting a finish or a style. You’re choosing to participate in that lineage.

Our hardware doesn’t just reflect good design. It carries history.
