14: From Melbourne to Jakarta: Building a Craft Partnership Across Continents

At Hard Brassware (HBW), craftsmanship doesn’t belong to one place or one perspective. It’s a dialogue - between cultures, practices, and ways of thinking. Our process is proudly shared between Melbourne and Jakarta, with both cities playing a vital role in shaping every piece we create.

This isn’t outsourcing. It’s collaboration. A partnership based on respect, creative exchange, and a shared commitment to quality.

Designing Across Borders

Melbourne is our creative base. It’s where design concepts are sparked - through sketches, CAD models, hand mock-ups, and exploration of material finishes. Here, we refine the proportions, scale, and tactile qualities of each piece before bringing it into production.

Jakarta is where these designs come to life. Our team there brings generations of metalworking knowledge, along with hands-on experience in brass casting, finishing, and detailing. The city’s tradition of skilled craft gives depth and authenticity to the final product.

Rather than simply sending files across the ocean, we maintain a constant design conversation. Prototypes are exchanged, adjustments are made in dialogue, and ideas are shaped together. This approach ensures that what we produce is not only precise - it’s also personal.

Our Team in Jakarta

We work directly with brass artisans and small workshops across Jakarta. These are not remote suppliers. They are integral members of our extended team.

Together, we:
  • Collaborate on form, detailing, and production techniques

  • Blend traditional tools with modern methods

  • Maintain human-centered craftsmanship in every batch

Some of the families we work with have been casting brass for generations. Their knowledge isn’t just technical - it’s cultural. They understand how brass should feel, how it will age, and how to shape it in ways that machines can’t.

This co-creation is what gives HBW its soul.

Culture, Ethics, and Sustainability

This international process isn’t just about efficiency. It reflects our values.
  • Cultural continuity – Honouring Indonesia’s long-standing tradition of brass craft and keeping it alive in contemporary form

  • Ethical relationships – Transparent partnerships, fair wages, and safe working conditions are foundational to how we operate

  • Sustainable scale – We work in low-volume production runs, with conscious use of materials and shared responsibility for waste and resource management

By sharing responsibility and creativity across regions, we’re not just making objects. We’re contributing to a shared legacy.

Final Thoughts

Every HBW piece is shaped by two perspectives. From the design pulse of Melbourne to the artisanal knowledge of Jakarta, our process is built on trust, mutual learning, and pride in the work we do together.

This is how we honour the material. This is how we honour the people who transform it.
